  Katy Perry

Katy Perry was born on October 25, 1984 as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (but later changed her name to not be confused with actress Kate Hudson). She rose to fame in 2008 with her breakthrough single "I Kissed A Girl."

Hudson was born and raised in Santa Barbara by Christian pastor parents and grew up listening only to gospel music. After earning a GED during her freshman year of high school, she began to pursue a music career.

As Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled gospel album in 2001. In 2004, she recorded an album with production team The Matrix, but it was never released. After signing on with Capitol Music Group in 2007, she took on stage name Katy Perry and released her first mainstream album, One of the Boys.

After the release of the full-length album, Perry has marked her spot in the music industry. With an album that has sold over 800,000 copies, and that has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, Katy Perry is officially a household name.

She released her second single, “Hot N Cold”, which reached the top five spot on the “Single’s Chart” internationally, and nabbed the 3rd spot on the Billboard Hot 100. She successfully launched her own tour, called the “Hello Katy” tour. “I Kissed a Girl” gave Perry a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and she was also nominated in five categories at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

Her third single "Thinking Of You" was one of three tracks from the album written solely by Perry, and made it to number 29 on the Top 100 where it stayed for 3 weeks.

Her fourth single "Waking Up In Vegas" made it to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009, making it Perry's third single to reach the top 10.

Among Perry's musical influences are Alanis Morissette, Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett.  Growing up listening to gospel music, Perry had few references when she began recording songs.

Katy is known for her unconventional style of dress. It is often humorous, bright in color and reminiscent of different decades.  She is also a cat lover, and has a female cat named Kitty Purry.
